The Local 495 Plumbers and Pipefitters Pre-Apprentice Program is accepting applications from Cambridge High School sophomores. Students begin the program as juniors and continue through the duration of their junior and senior years.
This opportunity allows students to stay at their home schools while still getting a quality, hands-on education. The schooling takes place one day a week and all students have the ability to get back to their homeschools in time to participate in any extracurricular activities that they are involved in.
Over two years the students will cover all of the topics that are covered in the first year of the apprenticeship and they will then have the opportunity to gain entry into the program as a second-year apprentice. This allows students to skip the normal entry process as well as getting them a boost in pay.
Things that the students will learn through the program include how to use various trade specific equipment like pipe threading machines, soldering, brazing, OSHA 10, CPR and First Aid, union history, trade specific math, isometric drawings, and welding.
This is not an exhaustive list but covers many of the high points of the classes. The students will also get a chance to work off of scaffolding and ladders as well as working with students from other schools.
Applications can be obtained in the Career Navigator's office and should be returned for submission by no later than February 16.
