Superintendent Provides Update on Back-to-School Activities

Even though the calendar shows it is the middle of summer, Cambridge City School District is gearing up for the beginning of the school year which starts in less than a month on August 16, 2022. 

In his remarks at the Cambridge City School District Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Superintendent Dan Coffman highlighted all the back-to-school activity providing board members with a brief summary of everything he talked about on the Back-to-School Livestream on Facebook earlier in the evening. 

Coffman highlighted for the board the school safety measures that are in place in the district including door barricades, secure entrances to the buildings, video surveillance, two-way radios, and school resource officers. 

Coffman also provided updates on ongoing facility projects including the installation of artificial turf and the renovation of the grandstand at McFarland Stadium; the renovation of locker rooms at McFarland Stadium and boys’ and girls’ athletic locker rooms at the High School; outdoor classroom space at the Middle School and High School; HVAC controls replacements; new playground installation at Primary and Intermediate; and new shingle and flat roofs in the district. 

During the meeting, the board voted in favor of resolutions approving the districts membership into the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS); the 2022-2023 Athletic Handbook; Pre-Calculus textbooks for high school mathematics; and declaring its intent to cooperate with OMERESA ITC to continue services for the fiscal year 2023 including EMIS services, and virtual server hosting and disaster recovery. 

The board also approved resolutions to approve two extended days for STEM training for Tom Hannon, Angee Hannon, and Michelle Johnston; Janell Williams Photography to be the district photographer; the awarding of student accident insurance for the 2022-2023 school year to Student Protective Agency of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; and a 5-year athletic training services agreement with Southeast Ohio Regional Medical Center.

In personnel matters, the board approved Tana Hall, Hailie West, and Kristina Cosgrave as attendant aides; William Calvert as educational aide and in school suspension monitor; Vickie Leeper as bus aide and mail courier; Jeremy Wheeler as a building custodian; Lois Ault and Laken Feldner as substitute custodians; and Holly Dellinger as a volunteer.

The board also approved the limited teacher contracts for Logan McCort and Kylie Tucker; Dana Todd as a substitute teacher; summer school bus drivers Sally Fields, Mike Mesarchik, and Waylon Mohler; Abby Winland as summer CATS Camp aide, Susanna Mascolino as a Summer CAT Camp teacher; Kelley Kenworthy as Summer Learning and Opportunities Grant fiscal payroll administrator; Laura Carpenetti as Summer Learning and Opportunities Grant fiscal administrator; Rose Marie Daymut as summer Learning and Opportunities Grant program manager; and Robin Lahmers as the Summer Learning and Opportunities Grant assistant program manager. 

The board also approved amendments for the existing administrative contracts of Treasurer Ed Wright and Business Manager Dave Caldwell for their work and guidance managing several grants. 

The board also approved the resignations of Vickie Leeper and Amanda Markley as cooks; JP Feldner and Anthony Starr as math teachers; Karly Lyons Rankin as intervention specialist; Devin Nicholes as science teacher; and Trudy Tuttle as school counselor. 
The board approved the retirements of custodian Donald Leeper; cook Mary Ann Harless; and aide Carol Shinn. 

In athletics, the board approved the hiring of Jamaal Lowery as head baseball coach, Bob Shepard as head softball coach, Tim Gibson as head boys’ tennis coach, Tamara Gibson as head girls track and field coach and JR Fox as head boys track and field coach. 

The board also resolved that board president Amy Kissinger be nominated for the Ohio School Boards Association’s Recognition Award for her dedication to the betterment of the students the community, for her dedication to the craft of board governance through her commitment to training, service and governance skill; and her efforts to advance student achievement in the district and improve the governance of the district. 

The next board meeting will be on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at 5:30 p.m.
